Is it illegal not to have home insurance?

There is no legal requirement to have home insurance, but there are some situations where you may be asked if you have it.

There is no legal requirement to have home insurance. However, your mortgage provider or landlord (if you're renting) may specify that you must have a buildings or contents insurance policy.

Mortgage providers

Your mortgage provider may specify that you have a buildings insurance policy in order to get a mortgage. 


Landlords may require tenants liability cover which is generally provided as part of your contents insurance.
