What is High Risk Item cover?
For items worth more than £2,000, you need to declare them on your policy so that they're covered for what they're worth. If you have contents insurance, you can claim if your undeclared high-risk items are damaged or stolen, but only up to the standard limit of £2,000.
What is a high-risk item?
High risk items are items which are worth more money than most of your other things. This includes:
- rare or unique collectable items (including coin and stamp collections)
- watches or jewellery
- audio-visual, photographic or sports equipment
- precious stones and metals like gold and pearls
- photographs, prints or works of art
- musical instruments
- computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets and electronic notebooks
Why do I need to declare high-risk items?
Most insurers have a cap on the value of items they insure as standard. At More Than, our claims limit for undeclared items is £2,000.
If you have any high-risk items worth more than £2,000 and you haven't declared them with us, they won't be covered for what they're worth.
For example, if your computer’s been stolen and it’s worth £3,000, you’ll only be able to claim back up to £2,000 if you didn’t declare it with us beforehand.
How to find out the value of your high-risk items
Make a list
Start by writing a list of your high-risk items. If you’re not sure whether they’re high-risk, write them down anyway for now.
Work out the value
Make sure you give us the full retail value of your high-risk items, not what you bought them for on sale or second-hand.
For example, if you bought a second-hand watch for £3,000 but its retail value is £5,000, you should tell us that the value is £5,000.
Once you’ve got a list, you need to work out the value of each item. If you’ve got receipts and the item is new and undamaged, use that as a reference.
Do I need valuations for my items?
For more unique things like art, luxury jewellery and vintage furniture, it’s worth getting them valued professionally so you know what they’re worth.
What home insurance do I need?
It depends on what level of cover you want, and what type of home you want to insure.
High Risk Item cover is part of your contents insurance. It's there to make sure that valuable items worth over £2,000 can be declared on your policy so they're covered for what they're worth.
For any valuable items, it's worth checking if we class them as high-risk. If we do, they need to be declared on your policy or we won't be able to cover them for what they're worth.
The same goes for Accidental Damage cover. If you’ve accidentally damaged a valuable item but didn’t declare it, you can’t claim more than the £2,000 limit.
