Home Insurance FAQs

We answer your home insurance questions.

Do you have a home policy with us?

Make a claim, renew your policy or get help with your home insurance.

There are lots of things that can affect the cost of your home insurance, including:

  • where you live
  • the type of home you have
  • any previous claims you've made
  • any optional extras you've added to your cover

There's no one set price for home insurance - everyone's quote is different.

You can log in to your MyMoreThan account to see if you have any optional extras with your policy.

To check what kind of door locks you have, you can use online guides like Screwfix's useful walkthrough .

Wear and tear is gradual damage that happens over time. This can be things like worn carpets, loosening door hinges, faded paint.

Accidental damage happens when something in your home is damaged from an unexpected event. This can be things like a football through the window or spilled wine on the carpet.

Living in a flood risk area increases the chance of your home being damaged by flooding. This can increase the cost of your home insurance. Sometimes, it means that some insurers won't cover you.

If you're worried about finding cover in a flood risk area, get in touch with us. If we can't cover you, head to BIBA's flood insurance directory to find a specialist insurer.

Flood Re is a government scheme that works with insurers to support people in flood risk areas. It helps insurers provide cover for people affected by flooding. It also includes a Build Back Better scheme, which helps people recover from flood damage.

More Than is part of the Flood Re scheme. You can read more about the scheme on the Flood Re website.

Contents insurance covers what's inside your home, rather than the home itself. This includes personal belongings like your TV, kitchen gadgets and furniture.

You need to declare any high-risk items worth over £2,000 on your policy so they're covered properly. They'll then be known as 'specified items' on your policy.

You can declare high-risk items when you take out your policy or get in touch if you're already covered with us and want to declare something.

At More Than, we consider the items below as high-risk:

  • rare or unique collectable items (including coin and stamp collections)
  • watches or jewellery
  • audio-visual, photographic or sports equipment
  • precious stones and metals like gold and pearls
  • photographs, prints or works of art
  • musical instruments
  • computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets and electronic notebooks

If you have any of these items and they're worth over £2,000, get in touch with us.

This is a type of cover that replaces lost, stolen or damaged items with new ones.

For example, if your laptop was damaged in a flood and couldn't be repaired, we'd replace it with a new version of the same model.

Home insurance can be harder to get if your house has subsidence.

At More Than, we cover loss and damage caused by:

  • subsidence
  • heave and landslip

Some exclusions apply to this cover. If you suspect your home is suffering from subsidence, contact us to discuss what to do next.

If you're having a hard time finding cover because of subsidence, there are specialist insurers that might be able to help.

We can cover bicycles under home insurance, but it depends how much they're worth.

We cover bicycles as standard if they're worth £350 or less. If your bicycle is worth more than £350, you need to declare it on your policy for it to be covered up to its full value.

We offer cover if your trees, shrubs, plants and lawn are damaged.

Our Plus or Premium Home Insurance covers garden contents as standard. This means you're covered if either your personal belongings or your family's contents are damaged while kept in your garden.

Check your policy book to see what is and isn't covered.

Credit checks are carried out for quotes with new customers. These are soft searches run to check if you're in a good spot to take out cover with us.

Your credit score can affect your home insurance and the cost of it. We usually carry out a credit check when you go ahead with a home insurance quote with us.

Home Emergency Extra cover can be useful for those urgent moments where you need support fast.

It's designed to help you when an emergency happens to your home, like a boiler failure or roof damage. It means any urgent damage can be temporarily repaired until you get it permanently fixed.

More Than Premium policies include this as standard, but you can add it to other cover levels.

Check your policy book for a full list of what is and isn't covered.

We cover phones under home insurance as standard if the phone is worth less than £2,000. If it's worth more, you'll need to declare it with us so it's on your policy.

Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home, rather than your belongings inside it. This includes things like your roof, doors, windows and pipes.

We'll give you an estimate for how much it would cost to rebuild your home when you take out a policy with us. We'll base this on the details you give us about your home.

But if you want to look into things further, you can try an online calculator like the ABI's rebuild calculator, to see if the figure you get is different.

Our home insurance covers damage caused by oil and water leaks in the home.

We also cover trace and access up to £10,000 with our Premium level of cover, and £5,000 on More Than and Plus.

If you've declared a high-risk item on your policy, it won't be covered outside of your home unless you have Cover Away from Home. We'll ask you if you want Cover Away from Home when you declare an item on your policy.

If you don't choose Cover Away from Home for your declared item, it may not be covered.

Check your policy schedule for more information.

Yes, your outbuildings are covered on all our home insurance levels. We cover theft from outbuildings up to the following limits:

  • £1,500 for More Than
  • £2,000 for Plus
  • £7,500 for Premium

Your home insurance doesn't cover faulty workmanship, installation or design.

But if you have Home Legal Expenses, you may have cover to help you resolve these issues.

Our Plus and Premium levels of cover have Home Legal Expenses as standard.

You can find full details in your policy book.

If you're taking on home improvement projects, you need to let us know. Get in touch with us and tell us what you're planning on doing.

If you don't tell us about any renovations, you might not be able to claim. This is because your policy could become invalid if we're not aware of big home projects.

You should also check you still have the correct level of home insurance cover when the work's done. Extensions and other structural changes might increase the value of your property, and you don't want to be underinsured.

While insurance covers you for unexpected loss or damage to your home or contents, it doesn't cover loss or damage caused by:

  • faulty design
  • inadequate or inaccurate plans or specifications
  • faulty materials
  • poor workmanship

You can find all our claims limits on our Home Insurance page.

This includes claims limits for things like your total contents, your total buildings, theft from outbuildings and so on.

If the cost of repair is more than a claims limit, you'll need to pay the rest yourself. This doesn't include your excess, which you'll pay when you claim.

Yes. When More Than was first taken on by Admiral Group/EUI, we couldn't offer customers a More Than Home Insurance policy, so customers were moved across to an Admiral Home insurance policy if they were happy to be.

Since then, we've re-launched More Than home insurance. The cover is different to old More Than policies, so if you choose to take out a new policy, it's important that you check the details of it to make sure the cover meets your needs.

If you'd like help understanding More Than home insurance, please see the tier table outlining what it covers. You can also get in touch with us so we can help you further.
