Premier policies bought before 20 March 2022
If you took out a pet insurance policy with us before 20 March 2022, different limits may apply.
If your policy has both a total vet fee limit as well as a limit per accident or illness, then both these limits will apply until notified at renewal. Depending on the level of cover selected, your policy will either be subject to a total vet fee limit of £4,000 (with each accident or illness limited to £1,000 of vet treatment) or £12,000 (with each accident or illness limited to £4,000 of vet treatment) each year.
If your policy has a total vet fee limit only, then this will remain unchanged.
More details on the vet fees limits that apply to your policy can be found in your schedule, or on your policy documents. If you're unsure, get in touch.

Vets costs and cover
When you need your vet's help, pet insurance can support you by assisting with the cost of vet fees. Our internal vet, Martin, explains the different accidents and illnesses that could occur and what they can cost***:
"Sadly, hundreds of cats get hit by cars every year. Many of those who survive have serious injuries, such as broken bones which need extensive veterinary treatment and recovery time at vets and at home. The average cost of this treatment is £1,654.72 based on 349 claims.”
“Lumps and bumps are common on our pets. Often, the best way to be sure what the lump is and whether it needs treatment is to have it removed and sent for analysis. Our claims data shows that malignant tumours such as lymphoma in dogs, which can need chemotherapy, cost an average of £2,547 based on 485 claims. Even a benign fatty lump (lipoma) has an average claim cost of £628 based on 1,685 claims.”
“Diabetes is a common hormonal condition in both dogs and cats. These pets usually need daily insulin injections for life. This needs a great deal of pet owner time and devotion, plus there are significant lifelong costs involved. The average claimed costs for a cat with diabetes are £1,821 based on 219 claims, with dogs being higher at £2,359 based on 576 claims."
How we calculate your pet insurance cost
All pets are totally unique, which is why we give you a personalised quote to cover the cost of covering your pet. Different things can affect the cost of their insurance, such as:
- Age: it happens to the best of us. As your pet ages, pet insurance costs increase, because as your pet gets older, they're more likely to get ill.****
- Breed: no two pets are the same and their differences can cause the cost of insurance to vary.
- Vets: improvements in treatment care can cause the cost of looking after your pet to increase.
- Claims: a claim being paid can also cause your renewal price to increase.****
What isn't covered by pet insurance
- Vaccinations
- Spaying or castration
- Flea treatment
- Wormers
- Nail clipping
- Grooming.
