Is it illegal not to have home insurance?

There is no legal requirement to have Home Insurance. However, your mortgage provider or landlord (if you're renting) may specify that you must have a buildings or contents insurance policy.

Mortgage providers

Your mortgage provider may specify that you have a buildings insurance policy in order to get a mortgage. 

Landlords

Landlords may require tennants liability cover which is generally provided as part of your contents insurance.
