The best winter wellness spas

When you think about booking a spa break, the image of snowy forests, crisp snow and thermal baths with a mountain backdrop may not immediately spring to mind.

However, spa breaks in winter destinations are becoming more and more popular and there are some fantastic destinations to choose from.

From bathing in the restorative waters of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland to hot stone therapy in Latvia, our Travel team researched some of the best winter spa experiences that'lll benefit your mind, body and soul.

Amber Spa Boutique Hotel, Jurmala, Latvia

The resort town of Jurmala in Latvia offers a number of spa hotels so you can take your pick. One of the most luxurious is the Amber Spa Boutique Hotel.

This family-run sauna offers fabulous service and treatments that range from hot steam rooms to an ice-cold plunge pool.

If the thought of being beaten with birch twigs appeals to you (this is another treatment on offer), apparently it does wonders for your circulation and complexion.

We’ll let you be the judge of that!

Once your treatments are over for the day, why not take a walk along the snowy beach just outside your door? It really is a sight you won’t forget.

Raison D'être Spa, Stockholm, Sweden

The newly established Raison d'être spa in the upmarket Östermalm district is well worth a visit. It’s not the cheapest, but nothing is in Sweden, and you’ll certainly get your money’s worth at this exclusive, premium quality spa. Why not try out a Be Balanced session?

This two-hour experience starts with being shaken from the ankles by a high-tech machine which claims to align your spine.

You’ll then be treated to a relaxing, but thorough joint-stretching massage which will release any tension in your muscles.
After your pamper session you can chill out by the waterfront and enjoy a delicious brunch, or supper as the sun sets.

Telegraaf Hotel Elemis Spa, Tallinn, Estonia

Situated in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, the Telegraaf Hotel Elemis spa has some of the best spa facilities and treatments available.

Here you’ll find traditional steam rooms, saunas and plunge pools, and also a charming little pool with a glass roof - great fun to watch the snow fall down while you relax in the warm water.

The great thing about this spa is that you can pop in before or after a day’s sightseeing as a day guest and stay for as long as you like.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Iceland is one of the best winter spa destinations in the world and offers so much in terms of relaxation, including its wonderful geothermal open-air spas.

As you bask in the steamy warm waters of the Blue Lagoon, you may even be treated to a spectacular show from the Northern Lights as they illuminate the dark sky.

As well as bathing in the rejuvenating natural pools, you can enjoy treatments such as craniosacral therapy (which relieves tension by gentle manipulations of the skull and head) and traditional body massage.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa, Colorado, USA

If you’re looking for a mountainous spa break a bit further afield, then consider Colorado. The Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa offers everything you would expect in a rustic hideaway, set amid rolling mountains and lush woodland.

Here you can choose from a wide range of treatments such as The Ultimate Zen which includes a full-body scrub, warming wrap treatment and a massage with shea butter and essential oils.

If all that relaxation leaves you feeling refreshed and full of energy, why not hit the slopes at one of the areas many ski resorts.
