Five last-minute escapes for May bank holiday

The daffodils and crocuses are in full bloom and spring seems to be on the way at last. If the thought of sunshine has got you thinking about getting away from it all for a few days and you can’t wait until summer, why not sneak in a little May Bank Holiday break?
We’ve tracked down some of the best around. These are destinations that are perfect for solo travellers, couples and families alike. From soaking up the sun in Cyprus to soaking up the history in Naples, there is something here to suit all tastes and budgets.

1. Sun worshipping in Cyprus

Situated in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean, Cyprus offers plenty of early-season sunshine, beautiful beaches and plenty to do for all the family. Sun worshippers can enjoy relaxing on the beach, while there are plenty of water sports and coastal walks to please more adventurous types.

2. Portuguese charm in Madeira

Madeira, island neighbour to the Canaries', offers a fabulous mix of volcanic scenery, beautiful coastland and Portuguese charm. Being in the Atlantic, the temperature in May might not get as high as the Mediterranean, but it is perfect for those looking for sunshine and a cooler climate. Madeira is also the ideal place to be if you prefer a quieter setting away from the nightlife and crowds.

3. Springtime in Paris

Springtime is one of the most beautiful times of the year to pay a visit to Paris. City parks are bursting with blooms, cafe terraces are a-buzz with chatter and the clinking of glasses, and the chestnut groves are in blossom. Whether you are a couple in love on a romantic break or a family heading over to Disneyland Paris for some thrills and spills, there are so many ways that the city of lights will capture your heart.

4. Fascinating history in Naples

Of course, Paris for all its charms, still experiences similar weather to the UK. If you really want to escape the chance of a rainy day in May, Naples offers a much better chance of sunshine. In fact, temperatures could get as high as 23°C, and perhaps even higher. Using Naples as your base, you’ll be in the perfect location to take day trips to Italy’s most historic centres, including Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

5. Off the beaten path In Bulgaria

If a cheaper last-minute deal is what you are after, Sunny Beach in Bulgaria offers sun, sea and sand in a unique and very beautiful setting. Bulgaria’s Black Sea shore offers comfortable accommodation, thriving nightlife, plenty for the family to do and miles of sandy beaches. This is a perfect destination if you are on a budget and want to experience beach life off the beaten track.
