It's a dog's life!

There are so many positives to owning a dog. Whether you and your pooch enjoy walks in the park or hanging out on the sofa, this special bond can feel more like a daily reward, rather than a responsibility.

We wanted to find out more about the relationship between humans and their canine best friend, so asked more than 1,000 dog owners a series of questions. We also teamed up with YouTuber, xameliax, to create an exclusive video that features her puppy, Toby. The two have been inseparable since Amelia first brought him home when he was just eight weeks old, so it was interesting to see how the pair interact together.

The relationship between dogs and their owners

In our survey, dog owners revealed popular topics that they chat with their dog about. Probably unsurprisingly, 38% spoke about food, while 22% discussed their ideas, and 13% admitted to talking to their pooch about their partner. It’s clear that as well as keeping you active, a dog is also a good sounding board.

And with food being the most popular topic of conversation between owner and their hound,it is unsurprising that a third of owners admitted to feeding their dogs human food items, such as cheese. A similar percentage of people also feed their dog fruit and veg, and even a steak from time to time.

This was a little worrying for us to hear, as human food items – while tasty to us – can be poisonous for animals. If you’re unsure about what is and isn’t suitable for your dog, read our guide to feeding your pet.

Most of our survey respondents admitted, like their dogs, that they are always hungry and prefer being outdoors.

Did you know that, according to our data, the most common breed of dog is the cocker spaniel? We asked lifestyle blogger and YouTuber, xameliax to film her red cocker spaniel puppy, Toby over a day to see what he gets up to. Watch the video below to see how Toby spends his day…

It goes without saying that owners and their dogs should stay active, but having a close bond can have added benefits for overall health and wellbeing, too. It’s also vital to make sure that you have adequate pet insurance as you never know what surprises are around the corner.
