But what is home insurance?

Why do I need it?
If your house was flooded and your belongings ruined, or there was a fire in your flat, would you have the money ready to make the necessary repairs and return your home to normal?

That’s where home insurance comes in. Having home insurance means you won’t have to foot the bill should the unexpected happen, be that a fire, burglary or even an accident. Although it’s not a legal requirement to have home insurance, you might want to consider the peace of mind having a policy can bring you.

Home insurance is typically split into two parts: buildings and contents insurance. Buildings insurance covers you against damage to your home itself i.e the roof, whereas contents insurance covers the things inside it (anything that would fall out if you tipped it upside down). But how do you decide which is the best home insurance policy for you? You can buy both buildings and contents insurance in a combined policy or separately, depending on your needs. Our home insurance covers your home both inside and out so there's nothing to worry about.

Buildings insurance

What does buildings insurance cover?

You’ll be covered for a rebuild value of up to £1m, alternative accommodation for up to £30k (including any pets), locks and keys cover, plus up to £200 for certain home emergencies (although you can upgrade this to £1,000 worth of cover if needed). Find out more about our buildings insurance.

Home contents insurance

What does contents insurance cover?

House contents insurance will cover your belongings up to £100k, new for old cover (irreparable items such as carpets and furniture replaced with new ones), £7500 for high value and high risk items, theft from outbuildings, £500 freezer food cover and £1000 locks and keys cover. Upgrade to get £11,250 for items moved temporarily away from home and £2000 for contents in the open. Find out more about our contents insurance.

Need additional home insurance cover?

Find out more about the options available to you below:
You can tailor-make your cover to suit your needs by adding additional cover options to your policy. Accidental damage and home emergency cover are just two of our most popular options, ensuring your home is protected should the unexpected happen:
Home emergency cover

Home Emergency Cover

For those real emergency situations, be reassured by our Home Emergency Cover. Upgrade your policy to include this and should the worse happen, we’ll send one of our recommended tradespeople to come to your home and make it safe and secure again. You’ll be covered up to £1000 (£200 as standard) to help fix electrical supply or main heating system failures, repairs to your roof and plumbing or drainage systems.

Accidental damage

Accidental damage

Take the stress out of accidents – they happen but they don’t need to be an issue. Add accidental damage to your buildings insurance and you’ll be covered for accidental damage to drains and pipes, windows, baths and toilets. Add it to your contents insurance and you'll be covered for accidental damage to your carpets, furniture, TVs and computer equipment in your home.

Compulsory £250 excess applies.

Insurance jargon buster

Insurance is full of terms that don't make an awful lot of sense. Here we shed some light on the worse offenders:
New for old cover

New for old

New for old says what it does on the tin. In the event of loss or damage, we’ll replace items such as carpets and furniture (if they can't be repaired) with new ones. Simple!

Exclusions apply.

Trace and access cover

Trace and access

If you purchase our upgraded buildings insurance, one of the key benefits is that you'll get up to £5,000 trace and access cover. This means that after a leak has been fixed, we'll replace any part of your home that's been damaged in order to locate a water or heating system leak e,g flooring. If water freezing in your pipes has caused the leak, we'll also repair the damaged pipe.

Wear and tear

Wear and tear

Wear and tear occurs naturally and is an inevitable part of ageing so is not covered by our home insurance policies.  You wouldn't be covered for damage caused by rust, damp, condensation, fading and frost, or the effects of tasks such as cleaning, repairing and restoration of items in your home.

Storm damage

Storm damage

Although storm damage is fairly self explanatory, what is and isn't covered by your home insurance policy is a little more complicated. Although a period of bad weather is unlikely to cause damage to your home, a violent storm could cause significant damage. If you lose any roof tiles, or worse, we'll help to repair it but damage to fences, hedges and gates isn't covered so make sure everything is secured outdoors if a period of violent stormy weather is forecast.
