LOW MILER car insurance

Your frequently asked questions

What is a LOW MILER device?

The device is smaller than a smart phone and is connected to your car’s OBD-II socket (on-board computer socket), this is usually found around the dashboard or footwell below the steering wheel.

The LOW MILER device will be sent in the post to your home address. This usually takes up to 5 days to arrive from the date you purchased your policy.

Once the device is fitted it will record information about how many miles you drive and where your car is kept overnight. We will send you updates weekly by email on your mileage used.

Can I drive my car before the LOW MILER device is fitted?

Yes, you can drive your car as soon as your policy has started.

However, it’s important you fit the LOW MILER device to your car as soon as you receive it in the post, or by the day your cover starts.

Don’t worry if you plug it in early, we won’t start to count your miles until your policy has started so you can fit the device straight away.

Your policy will be cancelled if the device is not fitted within 7 days of your cover starting.

If you were to have an accident when the device was not fitted then there is an additional excess of £500 which would apply along with any other compulsory and voluntary excess on your policy.

We will waive the additional excess if you have an accident before you receive your smart device. If an accident occurs after you receive the device, but it was not installed, then the additional excess will apply.

What will happen if the device won’t fit in my car?

Why have I received an extension lead with my device?

For the majority of cars the OBD socket is out of sight and will not require an extension lead. If we think your car would benefit from an extension lead we will include one with your device along with further instructions on how to fit correctly.

Do I need to return the device when my policy is cancelled or lapsed?

If you are cancelling your policy before the start date or within the cooling off period (for example, the first 14 days) of your policy starting then you can return the LOW MILER device back to us and we will refund you the cost of the device. It is however not compulsory.

You will receive an email from us with instructions on how to send the device back to us and how long your refund will take.
Please note we are unable to refund a returned device if you cancel after the first 14 days of your policy starting or if you lapse your policy renewal.

If you have an accident and your LOW MILER device is not connected then an additional excess of £500 will apply along with any other compulsory and voluntary excesses on your policy. Therefore it’s important you fit the device to your car as soon as you receive it.

How do top up miles work?

The LOW MILER device will track the miles you have driven and estimate how many miles you are likely to drive in your policy year.

Don't worry if you run out of miles, you can top up at any time and for your flexibility we offer mileage in 250 mile increments.

There is a £25 administration fee to add on to the cost of your miles each time you top up your policy regardless of how many miles you buy.

So please bear this in mind as buying the top up miles you need in one go could save you money in the long run.

However, remember to estimate your miles as accurately as you can from the start as topping up can be a more expensive option.

Why might my policy be cancelled?

We hope we don't have to cancel your policy but you should be aware that there are a number of reasons why this could happen. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Failure to fit the LOW MILER device to your car within 7 days of your cover starting.
  • Unplugging your LOW MILER device and not plugging it back in.
  • Exceeding your mileage allowance (remember you can top up at any time).
  • Not parking at your declared overnight location postcode for the majority of the time.

For further information about the cancellation of your policy, please read the policy wording thoroughly.
