San Isidro, Spain: 15th May 2016
Spain is famous for its fiestas and May is the perfect time to visit. Being one of the sunniest countries in Europe you're almost guaranteed great weather, plus it’s the month that Madrid’s San Isidro festival takes place, and the whole city celebrates. You’ll find concerts and street parades throughout the city centre in honour of the Saint, and many of the locals dress up in traditional chulapo and goyesco costumes. A variety of other fiestas are held in Spain during May too, including Festimad, Malaga’s Noche en Blanca, Girona Flower Festival, IPA Beer Festival, the Snail Festival, as well as the Andalucian sherry celebration, so there’s plenty to choose from.
The Dresden Music Festival, Germany: 5th May - 5th June 2016
With over 80 events, beautiful gardens to explore, decadent palaces to lose yourself in and stunning firework displays, the Dresden Music Festival has something for everybody. Whether you are a fan of opera, classical music, jazz or street music, you can take your pick at this fabulous festival designed especially for music lovers. With over 150,000 people visiting Dresden for this festival alone, we recommend booking performances in advance to avoid disappointment.
Rhine In Flames, Germany: 7th May 2016
The Rhine is already one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, but on the first Saturday in May each year, it receives a fantastic makeover that really needs to be experienced to be believed. Stunning light and firework shows and special effects come together to create an explosion of colour that gives the illusion of flames leaping from the river. Watch from the river’s edge, or take to a cruise boat for a view from the middle of it all.
The Vienna Festival, Austria: 13th May - 19th June 2016
May is a great month to visit Austria’s capital as this is the time the city plays host to six weeks of performing arts and music. The highlight of the festival is the grand opening ceremony held outside Vienna City Hall, but don’t worry if you don’t make this event as there is plenty going on throughout the festival’s packed programme to excite and entertain you.
Frieze New York: 5th May - 8th May 2016
This annual art fair brings together some of the city’s most dynamic artists in a riot of colour, sound, talks and hands-on projects. See, buy and even have a go yourself at the contemporary art event of the year.
Grand Festival of Spring: Japan - 17th May - 18th May 2016
Where can you find priests on horseback, lion dancers, a thousand Samurai warriors and musicians all in one place? The Grand Festival of Spring in Nikko, Japan is certainly a sight to behold and a festival to end all festivals! This stunning and diverse celebration re-enacts the famous burial procession of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Japan’s first military commander. The world famous carving of the 'see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil' monkeys can also be seen here.
