Surfing has been around for hundreds of years. It was a key element of ancient Hawaiian culture; the chief was the best wave rider of the tribe. Although popular across North America and Australia, it didn’t reach mainland Europe until the 1950s when Peter Viertel, the husband of actress Deborah Kerr, was spotted surfing on a board he’d bought from an American on the breakers of the Cote des Basques in Biarritz. It’s called Surfers’ Paradise for a reason... Australia’s Gold Coast is a Mecca for all surf action with over 70km of beaches and four point breaks. A little closer to home is Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, home to some super reef and point breaks. Go there between October to March to experience the best waves. Finally, the home of surfing, Hawaii, has many amazing opportunities to hang ten. Serious surfers should try Hanalei Bay on the North shore of Kauai whose beach is a perfect crescent of white sand with a backdrop of waterfalls and mountains.
