Like many extreme sports, the roots of kitesurfing are buried deep in ancient history. The first people who realised that you could harness the power of a kite to speed you over the water were the Chinese in the 13th century, who attached them to their canoes. Incredibly, modern kitesurfing as we know it didn’t really take off until the 1980s with the launch of the Wipika water launch kite which meant that finally, if your kite fell into the water, you were able to re-launch from the waves. As technology has improved, so has the safety and scope of the sport.

There are four basics that you need to master for kitesurfing; learn to read the weather - no pro-kitesurfer risks riding in a storm. Learn basic life guard skills, after all, you never know when you can be of help to someone in trouble on the waves. Always check your equipment before setting off and finally, wear the appropriate safety equipment.
