Kitesurfing Insurance

Need Kitesurfing cover? We’ve got it sorted

If you’re heading to the beach, then one of the most exhilarating things you can do on water is kitesurf. If you’re new to the sport, get properly trained at a British Kite Surfing Association school, as although it’s fun, there are dangers and it’s important to learn the basics properly. The good news is that you don't have to worry about paying an extra premium for your Kitesurfing travel insurance. With your More Than travel insurance policy you’re already covered. It's important to read the small print too however, as you may have to pay an excess and some elements of cover (for example personal liability and long term incapacity) will not be covered. Read the policy details to get the full low-down on kitesurfing cover.

Flying high

Like many extreme sports, the roots of kitesurfing are buried deep in ancient history. The first people who realised that you could harness the power of a kite to speed you over the water were the Chinese in the 13th century, who attached them to their canoes. Incredibly, modern kitesurfing as we know it didn’t really take off until the 1980s with the launch of the Wipika water launch kite which meant that finally, if your kite fell into the water, you were able to re-launch from the waves. As technology has improved, so has the safety and scope of the sport.

Jump on in and improve your skills

There are four basics that you need to master for kitesurfing; learn to read the weather - no pro-kitesurfer risks riding in a storm. Learn basic life guard skills, after all, you never know when you can be of help to someone in trouble on the waves. Always check your equipment before setting off and finally, wear the appropriate safety equipment.

Top spots to try it out

Tenerife is blessed with strong winds and great surf, which makes it a perfect place to try windsurfing and is why so many international competitions are held there each year. Voted one of the world’s top ten beach destinations, Boracay in the Philippines offers unique conditions for beginners with its moderate winds and warm waves. For advanced kitesurfers only, head to San Francisco to ride the waves within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge, just mind the boats and take a wetsuit!
