Critical Illness Cover

What is Critical Illness cover?

Critical Illness cover offers protection for you and your family should you lose your income due to suffering a critical illness. It is designed to pay out a tax-free lump sum should you be diagnosed with a specified illness/condition.

The conditions covered by the Insurer will vary but generally include Heart Attack, Stroke, Cancer, and Multiple Sclerosis. More than 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime (source: Cancer Research UK).

Critical Illness cover could help improve your quality of life by paying for necessary treatment or home alterations, paying off your mortgage or covering regular bills. Critical Illness can be added to a Mortgage protection or life insurance policy.

How does Critical Illness cover work?

  • In most cases the amount of Critical Illness cover you receive will be in line with the amount of life benefit at the time of death (i.e. remains the same throughout if added to a level term policy and reduces in line with the benefit on a Mortgage Protection Life policy).
If you are looking for a level of Critical Illness benefit different to your life cover call us on 0800 587 2653 to discuss your options.
  • When Critical Illness is added to a policy, you can choose between:
    1. A 'Guaranteed' product - where the premium remains the same throughout the term of the policy, and
    2. A 'Reviewable' product where the premiums are reviewed on a periodic basis (usually 5 years).
  • Some insurers will provide automatic cover for children.
  • If you set up a joint policy (one policy covering two people) the amount of cover is paid out on the first claim.
  • The policy stops when a claim has been paid. These policies have no cash in value at any time.
