Safe Driving Tip

Traffic jams, obnoxious drivers, bad weather - sometimes it feels like the gods against you on the road. Motoring journalists Mark Dishman, Steve Parker and Chris Pollitt tell us how to avoid and manage stressful situations on the road without bursting a blood vessel.

Tip one - be prepared
Preparation is the key to stress-free and safe driving. Make sure your driving position is comfortable, that the air is at a reasonable temperature and that you aren't going to be distracted by your passengers. Try and make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey and leave yourself a large margin for error in adverse weather conditions; many people don't adapt to the rain, and British drivers' lack of experience in icy conditions makes it one of the most stressful times to be behind the wheel.
Mark Dishman

Tip two - be aware
These days, situational awareness is more important than ever for drivers; check your rear- and side-view mirrors at least once every ten seconds, know what cars and pedestrians are around you and always be planning a way out if a situation turns dangerous. Multi-time World Driving Champion Sir Jackie Stewart once told me the key to all good, safe driving is to be smooth in everything, to do nothing suddenly or harshly behind the wheel and to always plan ahead.
Steve Parker

Tip three - keep your cool
My biggest bugbear is inconsiderate behaviour from other road users, particularly poor lane discipline. It can be tough, but try and distance yourself from the situation to avoid road rage. Ask yourself how much you'll care about the car that's blocking your way in a day's time. Flashing your lights, shouting and waving your fist won't make you feel any better, and the ditherer probably won't even notice anyway. Claim the moral victory and leave it be.
Mark Dishman

Tip four - keep comfortable
Don't get wound up in a traffic jam. There is nothing you can do about it so just shrug it off and enjoy the radio. The only thing that can create stress is you, not the situation. To really make things relaxing take lots of CDs, not just Prefab Sprout's greatest hits. Make sure you have things to eat and drink, and have things for your passengers to do - other than annoy you!
