Shift to a Higher Gear between 2000 and 2500 rpm

There is a lot more eco driving advice than you think that could help change the way you drive, making you an eco friendly driver and ultimately save you money.MORE TH>N has some green driving tips which should help you on your way

Manuals

A good green driving tip for efficient acceleration is to change up to a higher gear at no more than 2000 to 2500 rpm. The reasons for keeping an engine’s speed down are:

  • Some of an engine’s power is lost to internal friction, which increases with engine speed.

  • Driving at low engine speeds therefore limits the losses and reduces fuel consumption.

    Automatics

The advice to shift up early but apply a high load to the accelerator does not work for cars with automatic gearboxes. The eco driving advice for drivers of automatics should therefore accelerate gently whenever possible as this encourages the automatic gearbox to shift up at lower engine speeds. The ‘sports’ mode of an automatic gearbox should be avoided as this also leads to shifting at higher engine speeds.
